Best Geothermal Activity I have seen in New Zealand
I have seen a lot of wonderful geothermal activity in my life (Yellowstone is really amazing). But in New Zealand, it is generally hit and miss (mostly miss): think geysers that are stuffed with socks to control when they go off and tiny fenced off areas and thermal areas full of trash and beer bottles. Orakei Korako is none of that; it is really great. You take a small boat across a small but beautiful lake, with lots of mountains and trees in the background to the geothermal path. If you are patient, you will see many things going off. There are geysers, soda springs and mudpools. A great variety of geothermal activity with lots of pretty colors. You do need to walk and there are many steps, so it is not really for a person in a wheelchair, but if you can walk, and you appreciate natural things like this, you will enjoy it. You are allowed to camp there, but they shut the toilets at night. It is really the best geothermal activity I have seen in New Zealand.
